Strahov Monastery (Strahovský klášter)

The monastery of the Premonstratensian religious order started to be built in the middle of the twelfth century (after 1143). The monastery has known moments of glory and development, but also, several times, tragic events of war, destruction, fire and that is why it was several times rebuilt. The last major remodelling took place in the eighteenth century. The most important monuments include the Church of the Assumption of Our Lady, the Museum of National Literature, comprising 130,000 volumes, 5,000 manuscripts, and 2500 incunabula and a large amount of historical maps. The historical library is divided into 2 beautiful halls - the Theological Hall (Baroque) and the Philosophical Hall (classicist) and the Cabinet of Curiosities (predecessor of the current museums).
