Municipal House (Obecní dům)

The Municipal House was built, in the early 20th century, between 1905 and 1911, in the Art Nouveau style. Before, this space was occupied, until 1485, by the Royal Court. Then, it stood, for centuries, abandoned. The Municipal House is not the city council, the purpose of this house was cultural - here were held dances, concerts, cultural life of the commune of Prague, in general. The most important event that took place, in this house, was the Declaration of Independence of Czechoslovakia on the 28th October 1918. A few years ago, the building was completely renovated.

On the ground floor, there is the coffee and the famous French restaurant. In the basement, is situated the restaurant Plzeňská restaurace. On the first floor, we can see the beautiful Smetana Hall, with a capacity of 2000 people, where, every year, in May, the Festival of Classical Music "Prague Spring" begins in honor of the great nineteenth-century Czech musician - Bedřich Smetana . Almost every day, you can attend a concert of classical music.
