Powder Tower (Prašná brána)

This tower which is 65 meters high was built by the architect Matěj Rejsek, in the second half of the fifteenth century, in the late Gothic style. Previously, there existed, in the same place, a fortified gate that was part of the defense system of the Old Town. The tower derives its name from the gunpowder that was actually stored it, in the eighteenth century, at the time of the reign of Maria Theresa. At this time, the tower was, unfortunately, damaged, and had to be renewed later, in the nineteenth century, in the neo-gothic style. You can climb the tower stairs, and enjoy the wonderful views of the Old Town centre.
